It was really fun, but there is so many things... The Escape button made me loose all of my progress over 4 times on accident, the spider would just hover over me and kind of screw e, but overall really fun... The notes were a bit obvious it was cool though, but please lord jesus fucken christ add a pause menu.
This game was honestly awesome. I loved nearly everything about this... NEARLY. The last part of the game felt really out of place where you had to escape the spider. It was tedious for the most part... and i'm not saying that because I hate spiders. It just didn't feel like it belonged in the game. You have a game that revolves around solving puzzles and having these weird mechanics where you had to kinda figure out how to proceed but then you have a massive maze with a spider. No puzzle solving, just a tedious maze you have to get though to get to the end of the game. Everything else was perfect. The sound design, the puzzles and the way everything was portrayed was awesome. I do think that the notes made the puzzles way to easy to complete and I think that it would be better to remove them completely and allow the player to figure out how to move on. And trust me, they would. I go into more detail in my video so I hope you enjoy. I HATE SPIDERS!!! - Penumbra
Really glad you liked the areas that took the most time to make. The spider and the notes were the last things added when it felt like the game might be a bit too hard for some people and also when the play-through time was less than five minutes. Your feedback just gave me the fantastic idea of allowing the player to choose the hardness (scarcity of notes) for the full game. As for the spider and the mask part, you're right, they're both not very fun and kind of ruin the atmosphere built up by the rest of the game. They just don't match very well. I'm taking everyone's feedback towards these areas and I'll be sure to give them a lot more attention and testing to make sure they meet the standards and feel of the rest of the game. Invaluable feedback, great video, and thanks for playing. I'd be really interested in getting your feedback during future development. :)
Of course. Happy to help and I'm glad that my feedback made an impact. The mask part wasn't too bad for me personally because it kinda added a spooky element to the game and made the player run the other way to proceed. It still kinda felt part of the game just instead of the notes, it forced you to go the other way. The spider just didn't feel like that at all. There does need to be some kind of enemy in the game, like a shadow creature in the part like the forest, the apartments where you just kept running around till you came to a dead end and had to go backward to proceed or add like eyes in the shadows to give it a more eeri feeling. If the enemy stayed constant thoughout then I don't think it would be a problem in the full game. I hope development goes well for you and wish you all the best for the future.
I have one thing to say to this, amazing! I love the turning effect where stuff disappears when you go around an object, very cool. The maze was kind of annoying mainly because I got cocky and made a run for the exit and died at the last second, but very cool anyways. I think this game will turn out amazing when it is fully done, well done.
Thanks for playing and writing out such a great comment! Glad you had fun playing the first part of the game. What I should have done was make the beginning and end protected, because you're right, it can be really frustrating to have to start over. Thanks for the feedback, I'll be sure to make the puzzles in the final game a lot better. :)
Looking forward to see what comes next, you have my support. I would recommend adding maybe puzzles? That would be cool, or some things to do inside of the game, not sure, still amazing.
Hey man awesome job with this! Gotta say I wasnt sure if I was gonna make it through that spider bit! Love the trippy way things appear ! Keep up all the good work ! look forward to seeing something from you in the future!
Thanks so much! Haha I found your video before you even posted it here! Yeah, the spider bit doesn't match the rest of the game in difficulty, but glad you made it through. Thanks for the support! :)
I don't know if this is what horror game makers like to hear, but this game legitamitely scared the living crap out of me. Yes I have living fecal matter. Don't ask.
On a more related note, I really enjoyed playing this game. What I would like to see in the future, however, is a pause screen and a less tedious labryinth. Make more games.
Hahaha very good! Wasn't trying to make it too spooky, more unnerving than anything else. But glad to hear you had fun playing! Consider your suggestions done, I totally agree. :)
Dang, that's super crusty, sorry about that! And for sure, add me on Discord or Twitter. More than happy to talk game design and test out your project(s). :)
Thank you to everyone who recorded and played the game! Without you, it wouldn't have been up there on Itch and played by Seán. Go check out jacksepticeye's playthrough!
The mechanics for the shifting hallways and rooms were awesome, it flowed nicely througout the game. Some questions were raised tho. Does the coins make any difference if collected?
Also, the braille. What does it say? I got it to ''#AJ CO9S NE$$'' You also start to wonder who drew that picture in the cave. I had a lot of fun playing and it's a great game. (If you think anything in this text is a spoiler, tell me and I'll edit it out :))
Glad you had fun! Nice video, and even going back to try the secret area again. You're right, the code on the wall was compressed into grade-2 rather poorly and is missing information. Here's the grade-1: ⠼⠁⠼⠚ ⠉⠕⠊⠝⠎ ⠝⠑⠑⠙⠑⠙ Thanks for playing!
I just couldn't drop it. I had to know what the secret area was about. But does the coins make a difference? Thanks, Im going to check out what it means :)
This was a nice little journey through some strange, somewhat familiar, locations! Really glad you bothered to "Finally finish something" with this one, I enjoyed myself :)
I understand that the word Penumbra relates to something in the game.. But to call your game Penumbra and have it begin in an arctic blizzard environment, and then descend underground is strikingly similar to another horror game also called Penumbra. That was the end of the similarities of course and I still enjoyed, but it makes for a very hesitant beginning to have it so similar initially.
Really weird, really cool game! That maze tho lol Very enjoyable, very much my type of game! Interesting concept with the obelisk. Is this taken from some kind of folklore or is it just something you guys came up with? What next for your development team?
Hi! Thanks for playing! The ideas are from various books and movies and my next project is to turn this into a full-length game. It's just me at the moment developing it. :)
I really liked the abstract level design, the creepy environments, and the monsters that appear. Also thank you so much for having a maze that isn't annoying as I could actually see where it wanted me to go!
Fun experience! The 2nd area reminded me a lot of Spirited Away and No Face, you nailed the atmosphere in there! The spider part was quite intense too.
Your concept of building a 3D environment is incredible! I thoroughly enjoyed each area I was presented with and the sounds matched perfectly. I'd like to to see what else is under the obelisk if you extended the game past the Labyrinth. I will be quietly awaiting a follow up! ;) Here's my play through, the world generation was very smooth 👍
Really glad you liked it! Didn't think anybody would make the connection to the bathhouse from Spirited Away. The inside audio loop is actually from the movie! Excellent use of The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
the game was really intresting, a cool trippy experience the least to say. the makeshift map was great! As soon as the Stairs appeared on the stone structure thing,I was like “oh boy here we go” i like these type of games, the unpredictable map change. Very atmospheric, with new environment we were introduced to you could feel the shift on the atmosphere. I felt this was more as trippy game experience type game. I’d like to see a story be made outta this, like a story revolving around the stone and it’s abilities it has, idk that’s me. Overall I thought the was game was really good, keep up the amazing work! I made a small playthrough it’s The first game on the video if you want to check it out!
Love the energy in your playthrough! Had to cut it real short to get something finished for the game jam, however. Think of this as a short demo that I'll be sure to continue. :) Thank you for recording your reactions!
thank you, i appreciate that, also no worries, keep up the great work! Guys/Gals I’ll be looking forward to what plans you guys will have in store for it!
Well, some of the puzzles were interesting at least and while I'm not 100% a fan on little to no backstory in the game, It has it's own charm. I wish the spider had several pathing it can take based on where you are in the maze.
I had no clue what to expect going into this, and I was really impressed! The only part I didn't really get was the floating face, but other than that, the environments and scenes were damn awesome! It looks like the "error" quality setting joke was misunderstood by some. But this was just a really unique experience! Not sure what the coins were for though.

Oh hey! Thank you so much!! And thanks for stopping by again :)

Dang, I hate hearing that. I'll add a pause menu instead of it quitting in the next update. Thanks for playing and commenting!
hey man it's okay! It was a really fun game though i enjoyed the puzzles
looks awesome!
any chance of a linux build?
Just posted a build. Let me know if it all works nicely, because I have no way of testing!
This game was honestly awesome. I loved nearly everything about this... NEARLY. The last part of the game felt really out of place where you had to escape the spider. I thought the game was really cool, reminded me of P.T.

Hahaha very good! Wasn't trying to make it too spooky, more unnerving than anything else. But glad to hear you had fun playing! Consider your suggestions done, I totally agree. :)
The main reason why I ask for a pause screen:
I went to pause to take a break after dying 327 times in the labrynth, and it quit.
Oof.
But other than those suggestions, this is a great game. I'm a budding developer myself, so it would be great to have some tips!
Dang, that's super crusty, sorry about that! And for sure, add me on Discord or Twitter. More than happy to talk game design and test out your project(s). :)
What's your Discord?
I'm crossflame22, because someone took my normal user.
Good game! i made a video on it :D
Glad you liked it! Not sure if you missed the tent at the end on purpose or unintentionally. It was funny anyways, thanks for posting!
Love it! Thanks for playing puzzle master. -Yeas

Very cool analogies and interpretations! Loved your playthrough and you were spot-on with the maze!
Gave it a go...
Loved the video!! Thanks for posting, your reaction when the glass shattered was hilarious!
The first minute had me laughing. Such a savage, I love it!
Pat yourself on the back for me, 'eh?!

Agreed. A few people have commented regarding that. Glad you enjoyed it though and thanks for stopping by! :)
Gave the game a shot!
Thanks for playing! I'm glad you enjoyed the game even with the issues you brought up :)

Great play through! Wish I knew what you were saying, but I watched the whole thing anyways :)

I loved, loved, LOVED this game!!
PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER <3
Thanks for the fun (:
Another Spirited Away fan! Love your playthrough, will absolutely finish it/make more.
Fun experience! The 2nd area reminded me a lot of Spirited Away and No Face, you nailed the atmosphere in there! The spider part was quite intense too.
Glad you had fun! Thank you for the comments!
Really cool game. I love the different graphic styles. All the different settings are beautiful.
Ah thank you! Really glad you had fun exploring!

Very intriguing game, I liked how unique its setting/premise and gameplay was, quite artistic
Loved the playthrough. I've never played Frictional Games' Penumbra, but I'll check it out!
Awww man, it's a classsssic. Many loved it prior to them making Amnesia, but, making Amnesia definitely made them blow up.
Well, some of the puzzles were interesting at least and while I'm not 100% a fan on little to no backstory in the game, It has it's own charm. I wish the spider had several pathing it can take based on where you are in the maze.
Appreciate the feedback, thanks for uploading! Congrats on finishing the maze.
I'm gonna start a goddamn riot if this doesn't win the jam. This is an amazing game. Seriously.
Also, do you plan to make any more games?
Haha thanks for the kind words and rating message. Absolutely! I'd love to explore this concept more :)
I had no clue what to expect going into this, and I was really impressed! The only part I didn't really get was the floating face, but other than that, the environments and scenes were damn awesome! 3:26 tiny fire, little fire, small fire, and BIG FIRE
Yeah Its say error graphics in graphics quality but the game is running without any issues.
Bro I must say this game is Amazing 5/5. I Recommend every gamer to try this game :))
Thanks for the kind words and nice playthrough! :)
Hey developer I try to play your game but when i try to run the game it said graphical display error and i'm unable to play your guys game
can you guys do something about it!!! Thanks
There is no real error, I only renamed the default quality setting.
